Welcome messages

Greet newcomers automatically — welcome channel, community language, the welcome bot.

The community settings’ Overview tab sets:

• Community language — the locale for everything the server renders on the community’s behalf (welcome messages today, more over time).
• Welcome channel — a public text channel of the community. When set, the welcome bot posts a localized greeting there on every join, mentioning the newcomer (several phrasings, picked at random).

Welcome posts are system messages: rendered compact and neutral, not editable, deletable only by admins, excluded from search. Joining never fails because of welcome plumbing — if the bot isn’t configured (admin → Moderation & bots), the post is simply skipped.

Where members land

The welcome channel does double duty: it’s also where someone lands when they open the community without picking a channel themselves — opening the app, switching communities, that kind of arrival. Set one to control that landing spot deliberately, rather than leaving it to the fallback:

1. The welcome channel

   If one is configured (Overview tab, above), that’s where members land.

2. Otherwise, the first public text channel

   Sections top to bottom, then channels by position within each — voice and private channels are skipped.

3. Otherwise, nothing

   No public text channel exists to land on, so no channel auto-selects — members see the “select a channel” pane instead.
